Former SWCS librarian Doris Levin passes away

JAMESTOWN, New York - The librarian that kept us all in line at SWCS during our junior high and high school years - Doris Levin - passed away recently at 98 years old.

Ken Sonne, Class of '66 classmate has passed away

JAMESTOWN, New York - Dan Beckstrom and Sue Siecker Saullo both contacted me today with the news that our classmate Ken Sonne has passed away.

Ken was good friend of mine in grade school right through graduation. And at our 40th SWCS class reunion, we had quite a few good laughs and great conversations about our teenage years

I was looking forward to talking with him next year at our 50th. He will be missed.

JAMESTOWN, New York - I received news yesterday that Mrs. King - who taught many of us to touch type - passed away March 30.

News about former SWCS classmate Gary Shenkle

TACOMA, Washington - I am not sure exactly what sent me chasing down Gary Shenkle, a classmate of ours who left New York probably at the beginning of our sophomore year at Southwestern.

Maybe it was our upcoming reunion in July - the 60s reunion on July 11. By the way, I believe the Class of '65 is having its soiree July 10, in case you want to crash that older crowd's party.

In any event, for those of you who might be able to put a memory to that name, Gary died about three years ago, the law firm where he had worked told me. The law firm's name is Luce and Associates if anyone wants to try to get more details.

Gary Shenkle and I kept in touch after he moved for a few years. He toddled off to Wallingford, Conn. where I know he played some instrument in the high school band. Then I lost touch until maybe 10 years ago when he suddenly contacted me because of something I put on one of my blogs.

I think he accused me of being a liberal and we had a quite a lively email dialog. I am liberal by the way, as if that isn't obvious.

Gary had a younger cousin named Courtney, too, who I believe graduated from SWCS a year or two behind us.

The only other bit of intel I have about Gary is that at one point he was dentist in upstate NY - supposedly in a dental practice with Jim Burke (Class of '64?) Burke was active in football, wrestling and track and I remember him (Jim Burke) telling Nels Carlson (the Lakewood cop) that he was going into dentistry because he could make a lot of money. 

Gary gave up dentistry, got a law degree in Idaho and crossed the state line to Washington where he worked as a lawyer, specializing in medical malpractice.

SWCS retired teacher Bruce Crist dies

LEESBURG, Florida - Retired SWCS teacher Bruce Crist died March 3.

Mr. Crist was my 7th grade history teacher - plus, he was chief of our "home room."

I couldn't have asked for a better person to introduce me to the jungle called Junior High School!

JAMESTOWN, New York - A few days ago I posted a notice about the July 11 event in Lakewood - a 60s reunion (the SWCS classes from 1960-1970).

Food, drink, dancing, gossip about high school.

Sounds like fun.

But one of our Class of '66 classmates wondered if there was some way to keep track of who is actually going. It's more fun if you know which of your friends from 49 years ago will be there.

So! Here's my idea.

If you are planning on going to this July 11 soiree, shoot me an email and I put your name on a list on this page of people who say they are going. My name is already up there with a growing list of our classmates... Upper left... Yup...

This isn't a commitment, just information that you intend on going.

July is a long way off - plus July 11 is the day after my birthday so there are serious hangover issues for me to consider. But still.

There will be a reunion of people from SWCS classes from the decade 1960 to 1970 this July 11.

The notice below details it out. But basically this party will be at the American Legion Lakewood Memorial Post located at 179 Chautauqua Avenue in Lakewood.

Cocktails at 6, buffet dinner at 7, dancing until you can't stand up.

The cost is $20 per person.

A blog post without an obituary - what a concept!

WATKINS GLEN, New York - The last five postings on this website have been to chronicle the passing of either a classmate or teacher.

Damn depressing.

And so it seemed like an entry that was, well, more upbeat, was in order. 

It sounded good in concept until the gray clouds over Seneca Lake started shoving down on my head, reminding me of growing up in Lakewood and how January and February were intolerably long months.

Intolerably.

When I left of California, Aug. 6, 1970, I traveled around the U.S. for two months and landed in Napa, Calif. That was before Napa got discovered and turned into its current incarnation of wine-snobbery and outrageously expensive living.  I stumbled on a chart that showed how many sunny days Napa has per year and compared it to how many sunny days Jamestown has.

You guessed it, Napa has as many sunny days as Jamestown has rain, snow, or simply that gray wall of clouds we used to watch coast by outside the SWCS classrooms. And that first California winter, as I barbecued steaks for New's Years day and sunburned my nose on a Valentine's Day boating trip, I also discovered that I had something called seasonal affective disorder. No wonder the gray of upstate New York winters was so depressing to me.

Of course, that's what prompted this brief blog. Here I am, 44 years later, looking out today on a snowy, gray landscape, a landscape that seems even more grim after Saturday's brilliant sunshine that was as fabulous as it was damn-near blinding as it reflected off the snow.

The weather forecast looks good for clear weather in a few days (after at least a few inches of snow accumulates), so I can be patient, a personal quality in short supply for me when we were banging around the halls of high school.

Keep healthy everybody. I prefer to report good news here... Like the news about Mike Coon... 

Classmate Sandy Traniello passed away Nov. 24

Sandra L. Scott, 67, of Jamestown, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 in the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
She was born July 22, 1947 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Al and Vera Nichols Traniello, and was a graduate of Southwestern Central School.
Sandra worked at several jobs after graduating, marriage and raising her children. First she was employed as a cashier and posting clerk at the former Printz Co. in Jamestown for four years. She then worked at Maas Brothers in Tampa, Florida as an inventory control clerk, Tampa Office Supply as a sales clerk, and as Senior Auditor for Southern Wholesale Floral Shop in Houston, Texas. Sandra then served as Senior Front Desk Clerk at the Holiday Inn of Jamestown, bank teller at Security Trust Bank in Jamestown, and most recently as Customer Service Representative at Anderson Cleaners in Jamestown.
Sandra enjoyed puzzles, cards, shopping and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and was so very proud. She was also very fond of her cat, Alley.
She is survived by a daughter, Michelle (Mike) Marcellino of Laurel, MD and a son, Jason Scott of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Michael, Michela and Matthew Marcellino of Laurel; two brothers, Dave (Liane) Traniello of Clermont, FL and John (Donna) Traniello of Sinclairville, NY; and a sister-in-law, Betty Traniello of Jamestown.
In addition to her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Roderick B. Scott whom she married July 25, 1980 and who died December 13, 2009; two brothers, Frank and Robert Traniello; and an infant granddaughter, Marisa Marcellino.
A private family service will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Hope Lodge, 197 Summer St., Buffalo, NY 14222; or to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-0631.

Mr. Dominey from SWCS has passed away

LAKEWOOD, NY - I received word from Dan Beckstrom that the Jamestown Post-Journal ran a death notice for Gordon S. Dominey, better known to us as simply MR. Dominey from SWCS.

I don't have access to the full obituary since the PJ has put up a firewall to keep non-subscribers out.

You might think they would let people see the obits. But...

In any event, what follows below is a Class of '66 post from 2012 about, yes you guessed it, Mr. Dominey:

LAKEWOOD, New York - Classmate Jim Nelson was in Jamestown recently and ran into former SWCS teacher Mr. Dominey.

Like most of our teachers, none of these people ever seemed to have first names (unlike Dalton Berringer). I think his first name is Gordon, but I wouldn't bet my retirement checks on it.

Here's part of Jim's report on his close encounter:

I was with my mother waiting for my wife to conclude some shopping at the Chautauqua Mall when an elderly gentleman and his wife came out of the store.  My mom recognized this guy as an old golf league partner and neighbor.  She asked me if I knew who this gentleman was.  The man looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place him.  

It turned out to be Mr. Dominey from 8th grade Social Studies who is now 90 years old and living in a retirement home in Gerry, NY.  He looked great considering that I took his class 50 years ago.  After talking about the class, he recounted how he kept students in line with a pinch on the shoulder (similar to the Vulcan nerve pinch utilized by Mr. Spock) and, at some point, was told that he could not do that anymore by the powers that be.  After hearing that, he then told the administration that he would be retiring in two years.  

For the record, I never was on the receiving end of the Dominey nerve pinch and always thought Mr. Dominey was a great teacher.

Also for the record, I never got one of those pinches, but I did recall them years later when I had my children. My daughter was an angel (of course!!!) and my three boys were well-behaved. But there were a few times when I used a little gentle Dominey pressure on the back of their necks to keep them under control. (Usually from whacking each other.)

SWCS grad Scott Terry has passed away...

 ASHVILLE, NEW YORK - Back in 1966-67, when I was a lifeguard at Lakewood Beach, there was A kid who lived just up the street in Lakewood who hung around every day, longing to ride my motorcycle.

It was a stretch to call my Yamaha 80cc motorbike a motorcycle, but, hell, we all did - Buddy Hooper, Bob Fulcher. I think Jim Carr had one of those Yamahas, too. John Rupp rode a Honda 50.

Anyway, one afternoon, Scott Terry asked to borrow my bike - just to take it for a spin up into the village. And so I gave him the keys and off he went. He was a good kid, always helped me setting up and tearing down stuff at the beach.

When he got back after a half hour or so, he had a Lakewood Police Department cruiser right on his ass, lights and siren and everything the cop could do to embarrass the crap out of this almost 16-year-old kid. He was more embarrassed when he couldn't produce a driver's license.

Scott was terrified that the ticket he received would mean he would never become a cop - a goal of his even at that tender age.

I'm sad to see this guy pass away. But I'm happy that he made it to his desired career, despite my carelessness that day in giving him keys.

Rest in peace, Scott. In heaven, there's no need for driver's licenses. And I hope the motorcycles have more juice than a Yamaha 80.

C. Scott Terry, 63, of Butts Road, Ashville, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born June 24, 1950, in Jamestown, N.Y.
He was a 1970 graduate of Southwestern Central School and a graduate of the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department Police Academy at Jamestown Community College. He also took many classes over the years and became certified in many aspects of police work.

He became a police officer for the town of Busti on July 19, 1976 and became a Lakewood-Busti police officer on Jan. 1, 1983, when the departments combined services.
He retired from the Lakewood-Busti Police Department as an investigator on June 3, 2005. He was involved in many aspects of police work including animal control officer for the town of Busti, and was a certified firearms instructor. In 2009, he was hired by the Chautauqua County Sherriff's Department as a court officer. Prior to his years as a police officer, he was a dispatcher for the Jamestown, Lakewood and Busti Police Departments.
He was a member of the Jamestown Moose Lodge, the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and the Lakewood Fire Department. He was a former president of the Lakewood Police Benevolent Association and former president of the Chautauqua County Police Officers Association. Scott also volunteered for the St. Jude Telethon and the Chautauqua County Humane Society.
He had a keen interest in cars and enjoyed going to classic car shows. He also had an extreme love for animals and is survived by his dog, "Cubby" and his cat "Owen," and he always remembered his former dog, "Striker." He will always be remembered for his joke telling and his off-colored humor.
Surviving are a brother, Craig (Jackie) Terry of Lakewood, N.Y.; three sisters,: Cindy (Jan) Agnew of Warren, Pa., Judy D'Angelo of Jamestown, and Lee Anne Terry of Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Howard M. Terry, who died April 15, 2005; his mother, Vivian S. Andersen Terry, who died July 23, 2001 and a sister, Susan D. Terry Madura who died May 22, 1994.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Peter Dawson, fire service chaplain will officiate.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.

Classmate Bill Schruise dies (reprinted from the Post-Journal)

JAMESTOWN, New York - Bill Lee Schruise, 66, of 249 S. Main St., Jamestown passed away at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Dec. 31, 1946, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of Maxine A. West Schruise and the late Melvin H. Schruise.
Bill was a 1966 graduate of Southwestern Central School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from Jan. 26, 1966, to Jan. 25, 1968.

 Before his retirement, he was employed by the Chautauqua County Highway Department, where he worked from 1971 to his retirement in 2002. In earlier years, he had worked for the Canteen Vendco Company.
Surviving are his mother Maxine A. West Schruise of Lakewood, N.Y.; a son, Brian Schruise of Jamestown; and a sister, Sheila Brink of Sherman, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin H. Schruise, who died October 17, 2005.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald E. Ray, retired chaplain of WCA Hospital, will officiate.
Friends will be received for one-half hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

SWCS classmate Phil Calavitta passes away

Philip M. Calavitta, 66, of 43 Liberty St., Jamestown, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., from complications of a heart attack.
He was born Aug. 12, 1947, in Jamestown, the son of the late Anthony and Rose Marie Trusso Calavitta.
Phil was a graduate of Southwestern Central High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he worked as a manufacturing engineer at General Electric in Tennessee. Earlier, he worked at TRW in Jamestown, and Cincinnati Milacron.

He was a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and the Jamestown Moose. Phil enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycle riding and was an avid football fan.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Nancy Miller Calavitta; a son, Christopher (Hillary) Calavitta of Toronto, Canada; a grand-daughter, Sofia Calavitta; seven brothers and sisters, Virginia (Milt) Rosenberg of Oxnard, Calif., Rosalie (Vinny) Coffaro and Anthony (Elizabeth) Calavitta both of San Jose, Calif., Nancy (Anthony) Petrucello and James (Marina) Calavitta, both of Jamestown; Theresa (Robert) Sisson and Rosemary (Donald) Nelson, both of Gastonia, N.C.; an uncle, James Trusso of Jamestown; his mother-in-law, Ruth Miller of Warren, Pa.; three brothers-in-law: Walter (Virginia) Miller of Pleasantville, Pa., Scott (Helen) Miller of Warren, Pa., and David (Cheryl) Miller of Russell, Pa.; two sisters-in-law: Kathleen Miller of El Mirage, Ariz., and Susan (Bo) Unen of Warren, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1977; and his mother in 1997.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home.
The Rev. John L. Kuhlmann will officiate.

'The Fracking War' novel, The Trojan newspaper and Harry Robie

WATKINS GLEN, New York, USA - It was about 47 years ago that the late Harry Robie - yes, that Harry Robie - complimented me on some bit of hack writing I had done in our Southwestern Central High School newspaper, The Trojan.

Harry - excuse me, Mr Robie - pulled me aside after that weird double history/social studies melange that many of us sat through our senior year. If you were in that class, you might remember the teachers rotating in and out like cuckoos in a Swiss clock.

I was reflecting/remembering about that conversation this morning because Harry (whoops) Mr. Robie had liked the Eavesdroppers gossip column that John Rupp and I penned for the newspaper. All these years later, I write a column for a daily newspaper in Geneva, NY, the Finger Lakes Times. Nothing like the Eavesdroppers - or The Trojan - but who knows how much those few words from Harry were pushing in the background when I went to college, got into newspapers (and got out before the collapse) and eventually taught journalism for nearly 30 years.

Had I not gone into newspapers and been a journalist, I doubt I would have ever finished my novel set to be published this fall called 'The Fracking War.'

We had good teachers (for the most part) at SWCS. Mildred Dennison taught us life-skill math. (I still balance my checkbook to the penny). 

Mrs. Stupka - the wife of football coach Ed Stupka and who ran off with the SWCS art teacher - scared me into reading George Eliot and a few other authors who I might have avoided. 

A Mr. Coleman (in 8th grade English) really set me on the fiction writing trail by having us all do short stories in class. He was another teacher who took me aside. He told me I should pursue writing, specifically fiction.

I wish I had followed his advice earlier in my life. Now I feel that biological clock ticking.

Right after our 20th high school reunion, I started writing a non-fiction book called The Class of '66. I have published some pieces of it already. Before John Rupp passed away, he wanted to jump in and we were going to co-author - just like The Eavesdroppers in The Trojan.

Harry Robie might have liked that. Mr. Coleman (if he had a first name, I sure never knew it) would likely be happy I finally got around to writing fiction.

I wish I could get copies into the hands of Harry Robie and Mr. Coleman.

Tony LoGuidice, former SWCS teacher, coach dies

JAMESTOWN, NY - I received notice from Sue Siecker Saullo this week that Tony LoGuidice - MR. LoGuidice to the SWCS Class of '66 when we were in the 7th and 8th grades - has died.

My fuzzy recollection of Mr. LoGuidice was learning some math from him and being quite intimidated by his teaching style.

One episode sticks out, too.

One afternoon a group of us had smuggled in squirt guns into class. It didn't take him long to confiscate all the squirt guns. But one student - who seemed a year or two older, he certainly was bigger - didn't want to hand his gun over. So Mr. LoGuidice squirted him in the face.

The student - whose name might have been Larry Cramer or Kramer - stood up and even in 7th grade was taller and stronger looking than Mr. LoGuidice. I had never seen teacher backed up by a student before that. But Mr. LoGuidice talked the student out of taking a swing.

Anthony P. LoGuidice, 76, of 8 Fairfield Ave., Jamestown, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, in WCA Hospital, surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 21, 1936, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of the late Anthony and Jennie Arrigo LoGuidice.
He served in the National Guard and received his master's degree from Fredonia State. For 33 years, he taught science and coached football at Southwestern Central High School prior to his retirement. For several years, he was a member of the Jamestown City Council serving as a member of the Housing Authority and Urban Renewal Strategic Planning Commission. 

He was in-volved in property rehabilitation and the building of the new DPW

mechanics building on Steele Street. Anthony was a communicant of Holy Apostles Par-ish, St. John Catholic Church, a member of Liberty AC Club and a prominent member of REIA.

He enjoyed golf, gardening, hunting, fishing, his beloved dog, Bailey, and he was a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills. His family meant everything to him and time spent with them was very special.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Fiorella LoGuidice, whom he married Aug. 29, 1959; two daughters: Gina (Tom) Gazdak and Toni (Roger) Sigular, both of Jamestown; eight grandchildren: Corey (Dan) Brown, Jacob Sigular, Ha-ley Sigular, Anne Greggs, Jillian Gazdak, Hannah Gazdak, Devon Gazdak and Dylan Gazdak; one great-grandson, Luke Ernest; a brother, Richard (Arlene) LoGuidice of Rochester, N.Y.; a sister, Nancy (Judd) Niebel of Sheridan, N.Y.; a nephew, who was like a son, James Blomquist; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Apostles Parish St. John Catholic Church. The Rev. William Barrett will be celebrant.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be led by Deacon Samuel Pellerito at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Entombment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum.

Pat Flynn, one of our SWCS Class of '66 classmates has died...

I received news today from classmate Steve Sewell that classmate Pat Flynn died last week.

His obituary from the Jamestown Post-Journal is reprinted in its entirety below.

I knew Pat pretty well during our high school days. We were in most of the same classes and as fellow Catholics, rode the religious-instruction bus once a week a together. Once we headed off to different colleges, I lost all touch with him.

I last saw Pat (I think) at our 20th class reunion. We had a discussion about ROTC (which I believe Pat was involved with in college) and where our lives had taken us.

Perhaps ironically, he lived only an hour and a half's drive from where I am writing this (Watkins Glen) where I have retired.

A man that was loved by all who knew him, he is survived by his wife, Kathi; children: Tim (Colleen) Flynn, Malika Greutman and Shanna Maddock; brothers: Thomas (Sue) Flynn, Mike (Karin) Flynn, and Bill (Noreen) Flynn; sister, Mary Gokey; grandchildren: Henry and Zachary Flynn and Dylan and Nathan Maddock; nieces and nephews including: Tiffany and Randy Zajac; his mother-in-law, Helen Zajac and her children and many friends. 

Pat was a Vietnam veteran and avid motorcyclist.

Please join the family to share memories on Monday Morning from 9-10:30 a.m. at Crawford Funeral Home (495 N. Winton Road, between Browncroft & Humboldt). Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Please join us for a SWCS Blast From The Past, Shake, Rattle and Roll 60’s Colossal Class Reunion on Saturday, July 13^th, 2013. All the alumni from the classes of 1960 to 1970 are Invited to party at the American Legion Herman Kent Post 777 located at 26 Jackson Avenue in West Ellicott. The festivities will commence at 6:00 pm for cocktails and appetizers, followed by a buffet dinner starting at 7:00 pm.

Norman Wolisky, SWCS grad dies

Norman S. Wolinsky, 63, of 222 S. Aurora St., Ithaca, N.Y., formerly of Jamestown, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Hospicare & Palliative Services in Ithaca.

He was born in Jamestown on Sept. 25, 1949, a son of the late Dr. Irving R. and Frances Goldinger Wolinsky, and graduated from Southwestern Central School.

Norman had been employed in Jamestown by Fancher Chair for a number of years. He had lived in Ithaca for the past eight years.

He is survived by a son, Brandon Butler of Lakewood; a daughter, Natalie Wolinsky of Eau Clair, Wis.; two sisters: Sara J. (Dave) Reale of Jamestown, and Helene D. Wolinsky of Burbank, Calif; and two brothers: James A. Wolinsky of The Villages, Fla., and Steven B. Wolinsky of Sarasota, Fla.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Joseph D. Gerstel will officiate. Burial will be in Beth-El Cemetery in Jamestown.

The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service in the funeral home Sunday.
